  • Swap TVs and Tablets for Tree Views and Den Building this Half Term

    By on May 15, 2019

Children (and adults!) are invited to enjoy the great outdoors this May Half Term at Hawkstone Park Follies. The Follies, just north of Shrewsbury is a Grade I, 100 acre historical landscape that captures the imagination of both young and old. Full of stunning views, monuments, towers, bridges, gullies and clifftops, this magical hidden gem also includes an interactive Enchanted Trail, illustrated by local artist Emma Lawrence. Children completing the trail get a certificate at the end of their journey – if they have successfully crept past the dragon and avoided the trolls on route!
During May Half Term, The Follies aptly named Wilderness Week will include additional opportunities for den building, bug hunting, outdoor crafts and wildlife spotting, all included in standard admission.
As well as a week full of added value activities the British Ornothological Society will be in carrying out bird ringing demonstrations in the Grand Valley on Monday 17th May as part of an ongoing bird study, plus local Wild Craftist Ben will be onsite on Tuesday 28th May offering sessions where children can paint their own log animals. These drop in craft sessions will be in the Glasshouse Classroom and will be available for visitors and non-visitors alike with no admission to The Follies required.
Park Manager, Caroline Talbot said: “Our Wilderness Week gives an opportunity to try out hands on activities as well as encouraging visitors to observe the beautiful wildlife all around them. The Follies is a truly magical place and it is wonderful to see children and adults so enthusiastic about exploring the great outdoors. If just one of two people come away with a new appreciation of the natural world, we have done our job. Fingers crossed it will be many more!”
This year’s Wilderness Week will be running daily from 25th May to the 2nd June, with all activities, excluding log animals, included in standard admission price of £5.75/child, £8.25/adult and 3yrs and under free of charge.
The Follies is open daily until 3rd November 2019. Gates open at 10am, last admission at 3pm, gates close at 5pm. For full information of events and visits see www.hawkstoneparkfollies.co.uk.

  • WALKING DEAD SPOTTED

    By on May 15, 2019

The undead have risen and have been spotted at Hawkstone Park Follies near Shrewsbury as well as appearing recently on BBC Shropshire Radio. Thankfully we are not on the verge of a zombie apocalypse, just a few practice zombies getting ready for the Annual West Midlands Horror Zombie Escape Race on the 18th May.

With more jumps and scares than ever before, participants will have to survive the 5km route of forests, caves and ravines throughout Hawkstone Park Follies, with only 3 chances to stay alive.

Participants are given 3 flags for their belts on arriving at base camp with the goal of protecting these flags throughout the course. Each flag represents a life which could be taken from them by the many zombies throughout the Park. Even if they lose all three lives, they can still finish the course as a runner, although they will have joined the team of the undead. A number of Safe Zones and water stations are located around the course as well as medics giving out extra lives.

New for 2019 – The zombies have ventured further into the Caves for 2019, and as well as the much loved life eating zombies, there will be a number of scare actors on the course who’s soul jobs is to make people.

Park Manager, Caroline Talbot said: “We are thrilled to be hosting the West Midland Horror Zombie Escape Race again this year, run by Bodytech Gym. This popular event is a great way to get people active and outdoors as the adrenaline from being chased by Zombies definitely helps get the feet moving around the 5km course. Although I am happy to say on this occasion I will personally be staying behind the start line away from the zombies.”

This year’s run is taking place after the main Park closes so daily guests are able to visit The Follies without fear of coming across a Zombie on route.

To purchase tickets, potential zombie fodder are encouraged to contact Bodytech Gym whilst spaces are still available. Bodytech Gym Shrewsbury: 01743 236165 www.bodytechhealthclubs.co.uk

For standard Park visits, The Follies is open daily until 3rd November 2019. Gates open at 10am, last admission at 3pm, gates close at 5pm. For full information of events and visits see www.hawkstoneparkfollies.co.uk.
